On November 26/27, 2004 the SOEP group/DIW Berlin co-hosted in collaboration with the Graduate School of the Social Sciences (GSSS) of the University of Bremen and the Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg Delmenhorst the "First International German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) Young Scholars Symposium". The meeting provided an opportunity for 12 young researchers (sociologists, political scientists and economists) from 8 institutions (GSSS Bremen, DIW Berlin, Cornell University, University of Bristol, University of Essex, University of Flensburg, Humboldt University Berlin, University of Dortmund) to present their work in progress.
Addressed to Ph.D. students in both initial and intermediate stages of their projects the common ground of the participants was the use of the SOEP data in their projects. The symposiums was organised in a workshop format consisting of 20 minutes presentation, 10 minutes accompanying commentary by a senior researcher, and 15 minutes plenary discussion for each contribution. This provided the opportunity to talk about all kinds of issues related to theoretical questions, conceptual approaches, data management or methodological strategies with senior researchers of the GSSS and the DIW. Despite a large variety of topics and methods the use of the same data-base proved to be a valuable starting point for interdisciplinary discussions and cross-national exchanges. Thus the goal of establishing a real interdisciplinary dialogue was very successful.
The symposium took place at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg in Delmenhorst that not only provided an excellent conference setting but also catering for the participants and accommodation for non-locals. This effort is gratefully acknowledged. The initiators of the symposium (Kathrin Leuze of the GSSS and Denis Huschka of the DIW/SOEP) also wish to thank Prof. Dr. Karin Gottschall (Director of the GSSS), Prof. Gert G. Wagner (Director of the SOEP), and Werner Dressel (Executive Secretary of the GSSS) both for their outstanding support with the organisation of the workshop and their presence at the sessions. Further, we wish to thank all senior researchers (GSSS: Prof. Dr. Hilke Brockmann, Prof. Dr. Reinhold Sackmann, Prof. Dr. Johannes Huinink, Prof. Dr. Steffen Mau; University of Hannover: Dr. Michael Windzio; DIW Berlin: Dr. Jürgen Schupp) for their very constructive and helpful commentaries. The next symposium will take place in autumn 2005. Arrangements and a call for papers will be published and distributed in spring 2005 at the SOEP-Homepage and www.gsss.uni-bremen.de.
