Coaching

Interactive Research Process

The doctoral program at DIW Berlin is a structured curriculum with strong emphasis on individual coaching. Young postgraduates will be integrated into an interactive research process with close contact to excellent scholars and, at the same time, with a deliberate exposure to the policy field. As an independent research institute with thorough experience in policy consulting, DIW Berlin has access to many policy decision makers.

During the first term of the first year, students will become acquainted with the research areas and research projects of the departments. They will be introduced to the members of the faculty and will have a variety of opportunities to discuss potential research fields eligible for a dissertation. On the basis of these experiences, students will be able to choose the field courses of the second term.

Individual Career Development Plan

After a successful first year, each doctoral student will be assigned to a doctoral supervisor, who serves as the chief contact for the student. The supervisor and the personnel officer collaborate to develop a well-customized training and research program for each student. He or she will be given individual advice on his or her research career in the form of an individual career development plan focusing on both scientific objectives and personal development.

Access to a Worldwide Network

One of the major goals of the program is to promote individual career advancement of the participants and to ensure their future employment in both the scientific market and their international research area. DIW Berlin will provide every participant in the program with individual career coaching. Within the coaching process, labor market demands and professional requirements will also be discussed. DIW Berlin will give participants access to its worldwide network of leading economic research and policy advisory institutions. Longstanding contacts to these institutions’ top research staff members, and their recruitment and placement officers, will further facilitate the job search process during the final year of the program.
