IV. Quarter 2006

In November 2006 Elke Holst received her habilitation degree (qualification to teach at the university level) from the University of Flensburg in the subject "Economics". Her lecture dealt with the subject of the gender wage gap in management positions, including personality traits as an explaining factor. In November she also was appointed as a "Privatdozentin" by the University of Flensburg (a German kind of an adjunct professorship).

PhD student Ingrid Tucci will conduct her research on social stratification and segmented assimilation at the California Center for Population Research at the UCLA/USA from the beginning of December 2006 until the end of February 2007. She will be supervised by Professor Donald Treiman.

On December 1st, 2006, Gert G. Wagner was reelected to serve as Chairman of the German Council for Social and Economic Data (RatSWD) for another year (until the end of 2007).

In early November Gert G. Wagner was also selected by Federal Minister Dr. Ursula von der Leyen to join the Scientific Advisory Board to the "Competence Center for Family Benefits" of the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ).


III. Quarter 2006

Former staff member Charlotte Büchner took up a Ph.D. position at the University of Maastricht's Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA) in September 2006.

Annalena Dunkelberg, student research assistant, completed a research internship at the University of Washington USA/Center for Research on Families from August to September 2006. She was working with SOEP Scientific Advisory Board member Prof. Shelly Lundberg on family-related questions based on SOEP data.

On July 5, 2006, Joachim Frick received his habilitation degree (qualification to teach at the university level) from the Faculty for Economics and Management at the TU Berlin in the subject "Empirical Economic Research". His lecture dealt with the subject of "Family-Related Transfers and Child Poverty in Europe".

Elke Holst, Joerg-Peter Schraepler and Gert G. Wagner were invited as experts by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to the Consultation Workshop for the Development of the UK Longitudinal Household Study, October 4, 2006, in London/UK.

Former SOEP team member Bettina Isengard has been working as a Research Assistant at the Sociological Institute of the University of Zurich since August 1, 2006. Her work there focuses on the topic of generations in Europe.

Andrea Schäfer is visiting the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Essex/UK from October 9-14, 2006. She is taking part in the SOEP-ISER Research Exchange Program which allows young researchers to spend short visits abroad in order to be exposed to different research environments and to get in touch with potential collaborators. Andrea Schäfer will give a presentation on "Investment in the Next Generation - Private Transfers".

C. Katharina Spieß accepted an appointment as Professor (W3) of Family and Educational Economics at the Free University Berlin on July 1, 2006. She declined two previous appointments by the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main in cooperation with the German Institute for International Pedagogical Research (DIPF), and the Center for Social Policy (ZeS) at Bremen University. The professorship at FU Berlin is the first professorship in family and educational economics to be established at a German university in a department of education.

C. Katharina Spiess was appointed for a first term of office (up to 2010) to the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) at the Federal Employment Agency in Nuremberg.

Heike Trappe, Managing Director of the German Council for Social and Economic Data and Permanent Visiting Fellow at SOEP, received her habilitation degree (qualification to teach at the university level) on July 12, 2006, in the Department of Political and Social Science at the FU Berlin in the subject of sociology. Her lecture was entitled "Begabungsunterschiede zwischen den Geschlechtern: Eine Debatte unter Ausschluss der Soziologie? (PDF, 402.45 KB) (PDF-Document)" (gender differences in talent: a debate under exclusion of sociology?).
Her research is focused on labor market, family, and gender sociology.
In July 2006, Heike Trappe got an offer for a Professor of Sociology (W3) in the field of family demography in the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Rostock.

Gert G. Wagner was appointed by the Higher Education Authority of Ireland (HEA) as an expert advisor on Ireland's research infrastructure.


II. Quarter 2006

Since June 1, 2006, sociologist Olaf Groh-Samberg is member of SOEP staff. He was previously a research associate at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Münster. Olaf He is working for the project funded by the EU "AIM-AP" (Accurate Income Measurement for the Assessment of Public Policies), analyzing the non-claiming of benefits. He will also be teaching in the new master's program "European Societies" in the Department of Sociology at FU Berlin.

Hansjörg Haas has been a member of the SOEP staff since the end of May. He is a Senior Executive at DIW Berlin and will work in the field of the information economy.

Bettina Isengard and Charlotte Büchner have left the SOEP staff. We thank them for their excellent work and wish them the best for their career.

Olaf Jürgens started to work part-time from April 1 on as a research associate at the Fulda University of Applied Sciences. His work there is part of a German Research Foundation project on poverty dynamics in the rural regions of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania dealing with different life situations and their determinants over time. He left the SOEP group at the end of June 2006.

Martin Spieß accepted a part-time position as Professor of Statistics and Methodology of Empirical Economic and Social Research at the University of Flensburg, initially for a period of one year. The department is part of the University of Flensburg's International Institute of Management.

The Canadian Foundation of Innovation (CFI) has appointed Gert G. Wagner Expert Reviewer to the Expert Committee that evaluates large-scale project proposals.

Jürgen Schupp was appointed to the advisory board for the project "Household services: the potential need. The use of paid private services in private households", which is being funded by the Hans Böckler Foundation.
