Seminar Analyzing Extreme Weather Events from a Microeconomic Perspective

The workshop provides a forum to discuss state of the art microeconomic research on different aspects of extreme weather events, including (risk) perceptions, risk management as well as adaptation strategies, and the impact and consequences of these events.

Recent research has shown that extreme weather events negatively impact households, for instance by reducing their consumption or asset levels, often with persistent effects. Moreover, households adopt a variety of strategies to cope with climate shocks, both ex ante and in response to an event. In many instances, these strategies act themselves as a cause of vulnerability. Better understanding the magnitude of the weather effects and the channels through which the shocks operate is essential to design policies aiming at reducing households’ vulnerability and strengthening their resilience.
