Services of the Department of Development and SecurityPhD in Economics
DIW Berlin Graduate Center is accepting applications for its PhD program in applied economics once a year. A degree in development economics or international economics can be awarded in collaboration with the Humboldt-University of Berlin. There are no tuition fees, and successful applicants will receive a scholarship in the first year. In the second and third years, doctoral students with a research interest in development economics or international economics will have the opportunity to join the Department of International Economics at DIW Berlin, which is also supports the Households in Conflict Network (HiCN). The students will write their dissertations on research themes of interest to the members of the department, including, but not limited to the following areas:
Conflict, violence, war and reconstruction
- Understanding individual motivations for participation in collective acts of violence/insurrection, focusing on economic motives/incentives
- Poverty and coping strategies of households in various conflict regions (such as Balkans, Middle East, Iraq, Afghanistan, India, Uganda, Sudan, Angola, Mozambique)
- The relationship between conflict and migration: macro-economic effects of the displacement of people and the micro-level decision-making regarding relocation during conflict periods
- The role of sexual violence as a tool of war in civil conflict
- The impact of conflict, violence and insecurity on expectations and information
- Low intensity conflict and violence, for example in Brazilian cities
- The evaluation of programmes and interventions in conflicts and conflict-affected regions
- Perceptions of terrorism, insecurity and fear
Coping and household welfare
- Non-monetary welfare indicators and survey data
- Impact of microinsurance on households' vulnerability
- Impact of massive labour migration on the social conditions of sending communities
- Measurement and effects of intra-household bargaining power
Trade and Development
- Poverty impact of trade liberalisation
- CGE-based trade analysis

Teaching
Prof. Brück and members of the department offer several courses in development economics at the Institute of Agriculture Economics at the Humboldt University Berlin. These course are usually at the graduate level and include independent research projects (internships). Please refer to the web site of the Faculty of Agriculture at the Humboldt University Berlin for further information.
Furthermore, some members of staff occasionally contribute some teaching to courses on international and European economics at universities in Berlin and Brandenburg.
Internships
The Department is pleased to accept applications for research internships from highly qualified students interested in development and international economics. Prospective interns should hold a Bachelors or Masters degree in economics, have an advanced command of English and have an aptitude for mathematics (preferably with an excellent command of Stata and/or bibliographic packages), and be willing to work on an independent research project for a period up to six months.
