SOEP Advisory Board

From 2006 to 2008, the services and scientific output of the SOEP department were evaluated by the Scientific Advisory Board of DIW Berlin. A subcommittee of this board was formed to advise and evaluate the SOEP, supported by three Extra Members because of the interdisciplinary character of SOEP’s tasks and research.

From 2009 on, the quality of research conducted by the members of the DIW department “German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP)” will be evaluated by the Scientific Advisory Board of DIW Berlin.

Additionally, up to nine scholars appointed by the Board of Trustees will provide advice on the SOEP survey and SOEP service (“the SOEP”). With this Survey Committee, the successful advisory board structure that was in place up to 2004 has been re-established.

Development

From the beginning of its existence up to 2004, the SOEP had its own Advisory Board, which was initially appointed by the DIW Berlin together with the German Research Association (DFG). Its task was to give advice to the SOEP in the fields of survey development, service provision, and related research tasks. While being funded as a DFG project, the SOEP Advisory Board included well-known scholars as well as representatives of the funding bodies. Working together in a constructive and fruitful way, they played a key role in the success of the SOEP as one of the leading household panels worldwide.

In 2006, the Executive Board of the DIW Berlin made the SOEP Advisory Board a subcommittee of the DIW Scientific Advisory Board. With this restructuring, it followed the recommendations of the Leibniz Association Evaluation Group and the decision of the Board of Trustees in November 2005.
The decision of the Board of Trustees in November 2007 again changed this structure and the “SOEP Survey Committee” was established.
