VdF: Best Publication Prize

Organization and regulations

The "Society of Friends of DIW Berlin" (Vereinigung der Freunde des DIW Berlin, VdF) sponsors a prize to honor the best publications based on SOEP-data. This prize is awarded in the years between the biennial "SOEP User Conferences".

The prize is threefold and honors

  • the very best scientific publication,
  • the best scientific publication by a junior researcher (not older than 35 years),
  • the best paper or essay in popular media written by journalists.

€ 5000 can be awarded to either one or more publications.

Eligibility and Nomination: Best Publications 2013

Publications are eligible if they are based on SOEP data and have been published since the last award. This means that the current period of eligibility is January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2012.

Papers with authors/co-authors belonging to the SOEP Group or the SOEP Advisory Board are not eligible.

A pre-condition for eligibility is the registration of the paper in our database SOEPlit. In other words, the SOEP-prize is not only an incentive to publish high-quality papers, but also an incentive to send in publications to the SOEP-office. The reason for the latter incentive is most important: A continuous stream of strong publications is the best basis for funding a panel study. The registration rule will be strictly enforced: Publications which are not registered prior to the deadline of registration are not eligible. Please check if your publications are registered. The most efficient way to do this is by retrieving SOEPlit via the Internet. You will find SOEPlit here.

What is a publication?

In order to be considered eligible for the SOEP-prize, an original work has to be published in either a scientific or a popular journal/newspaper or as a book (or book chapter) printed by a publishing company. Discussion papers, copies of Ph.D. theses ("Doktorarbeiten"), and the like, are not eligible.

Nomination

Only papers which are nominated will be considered for the SOEP-prize. Papers can be nominated either by the authors themselves or by colleagues.

All research papers which are nominated are automatically considered for the general prize (best paper). Papers which are nominated for the junior-prize must be authored by a scholar not older than 35 years when the paper was published. We are aware of the fact that there are better criteria than age for defining somebody as a "junior scholar", but due to very different academic systems in an international context, age is the only criteria which works without any problems. In the case of multiple authors, the principal author must fit the age criterion for meeting the eligibility of the junior-prize.

Deadlines

Registration: For the 2013 SOEP-prize only papers registered not later than December 31, 2012 and not registered before January 1, 2011, are eligible. Please make sure that all your eligible publications are registered in SOEPlit; if not, please send your missing publications before December 31, 2010 to the SOEP-office at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin).

Nomination: The deadline for nomination is January 31, 2013. It is not necessary to send in the paper itself; sending in the title and the reference number in SOEPlit is sufficient. It is possible to send in a nomination for yourself or another colleague. If the paper is eligible for the junior prize and/or the public policy-prize, please note the prize category. For the junior-prize some notification of the birth date of the principal author is necessary. Nomination must be sent either by fax to the SOEP-office (keyword: SOEP-prize) or by e-mail to .
