SOEPdata FAQ

In accordance with data protection legislation, research visits to SOEP are required for the analysis of:

  • small-scale regional data, and
  • geocodes

Furthermore, we offer SOEP data users the possibility for

  • Short-term research stays (from a few days to approximately one month) to enable scholars to work in a concentrated manner on their research projects while profiting from direct exchange with the members of the SOEP team at DIW Berlin and their expertise with the SOEP data. Short-term research stays are usually self-financed. The SOEP provides the infrastructure but does not cover travel, accommodation, or living expenses.
  • Long-term stays for doctoral or PhD students (duration: from one month to a year or longer) are financed either through a scholarship or a grant from another organization. The SOEP provides the infrastructure but does not cover travel, accommodation, or living expenses. Visiting doctoral or PhD scholars are expected to present the results of their research—even preliminary findings—during their stay, at least in the framework of a Brown Bag Seminar to interested members of the institute community.
  • Long-term stays for post-docs, senior researchers, and professors who want to spend a sabbatical or research semester in the SOEP Department at DIW Berlin are provided to enable them to work in a concentrated manner on developing their research project using the SOEP data—with direct input and support from the SOEP staff. The SOEP provides the infrastructure but usually does not cover travel, accommodation, or living expenses. Visiting scholars are expected to present the results of their research—even preliminary findings—during their stay, at least in the framework of a Brown Bag Seminar to interested members of the institute community.
  • Research stays in cooperation with the SOEP: these stays are aimed at producing specific analyses of the SOEP or further developing the survey in the framework of common projects or research studies in cooperation with a member of the SOEP staff. The SOEP provides the infrastructure; travel, accommodation and living expenses are usually covered by the project funds.
