SOEP mourns Professor Johannes Schwarze

Personnel news of September 30, 2010

On Sunday afternoon (September 12, 2010) our former colleague Johannes Schwarze tragically lost his life at the age of 51 in a road accident near Bamberg where he lives. The accident was caused by a motorist.

Johannes Schwarze worked for the SOEP from the late 1980s to the late 1990s. From 2000 onward, he was a Research Professor at DIW Berlin. After holding positions as Deputy Chair in Bochum and Professor in Bamberg, and subsequently turning down chairs at the Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Bremen, he became Full Professor of Economics, specializing in empirical micro-economics, at the Otto-Friedrich University of Bamberg. In addition to his very successful academic publications, he was also always pleased to publish in the Wochenbericht (Weekly Report) as a DIW Research Professor, thus contributing to issues related to policy advice.

Through his sudden death, many of us have lost a highly respected personal friend and the SOEP has lost an internationally renowned research partner. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family. Hannes leaves behind his wife Martina and two adult daughters.
