Comment: Roman Bertenrath, Head Research and Analysis, Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft, IW Köln Consult
Moderation: Heino v. Meyer, OECD Berlin Centre
What is Germany's position in global value chains (GVCs) and how is it changing? Dirk Pilat will present a new way of looking at trade relations based on recent OECD work, including a new database on Trade in Value Added that was developed in cooperation with the WTO. He will examine the growth and employment benefits that Germany is drawing from its participation in GVCs. Subsequently the role and impact of domestic policies concerning openness to foreign trade, investment and innovation will be discussed. Finally, the presentation will reflect on how Germany's position might evolve in the future in response to global shifts in demand and markets, technological changes and other factors affecting the position of different economies in GVCs.
