A compendium of industrial indexes is published annually by the German Institute of Economic Research. These indexes describe the development and the structure of production and factor input in the industrial production process in the Federal Republic of Germany over the period of the last 12 years. The foregoing article deals with the most important results revealed by these indexes and examines the development of investment and capital stock, which passed a peak in 1970. Due to the simultaneous increase in production, capacity utilization reached unprecedented levels in most sectors, an exception being basic materials. This situation was accompanied by an unusually heavy demand for labor, resulting in a completely unsatisfactory development of capital intensity and labor productivity. The examination takes up the economic slowdown of the year 1971, which on the one hand led to hardly any significant reserve capacity and, on the other, brought on such a reduction in propensity to invest that growth of productive capacity, the basis for future supply elasticity, was placed on a dangerously low path.
