Abstract

The point of departure for a rational planning of transport facilities has to be the forecast load on the transport network in the form of personal and goods traffic. This raises the question of knowledge and forecastability of routes used in transporting. It is shown how the routes used in roadway traffic can be determined by means of a graphic approach. This is based on the empirically obtained spatial structure of the flows of traffic in the observed area, which is inserted in entirety into the model and becomes the decision-making criterion for the calculations of routes used, which must be carried out simultaneously for the entire network. Following up on this, the applicability of such a routes-used calculation for a) the planning of future transport infrastructure and b) the region-to-region analysis of traffic flows in a base year is demonstrated.
