Abstract

This analysis begins with an examination of the development of "relative power consumption" of Berlin industry in the period 1958 through 1968. Relative power consumption is measured by means of two indices: power coefficient (power consumption in kwh per DM 1000 of net production) and power intensity (power consumption in kwh per man hour). In a further step, Berlin industry is compared to other selected areas (West Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia, Hamburg) for development and level of power input. Regional differences in the relative power input of various industry groups are pointed out; differences between respective averages are broken down into their determining factors by means of adjustment for structural variations. The examination reveals the high significance which the distinctive industry structure in Berlin has in the comparatively low average power input of the city.
