The German Institute of Economic Research (DIW) publishes yearly a compendium of statistical indices which indicate the development and structure of factor input in the industrial production process of the Federal Republic of Germany over a ten-year period in statistically comparable basis data. The preceding article comments briefly on the most important results of the last compilation. Reference is made to the strong acceleration in investment activity in the past year which resulted in another increase - though considerably slower - in industry's fixed assets. With production and employment rising rapidly at the same time, capacity utilization has reached a new high, raising earlier DIW capacity estimates to a higher level and rendering necessary the computation of a new adjustment period for the regression of capital productivity. Capital intensity, which declined for the first time in more than a decade, points up the limits of future increases of employee productivity. These limits can be extended only if it is possible to permanently maintain expansion of investment.
