This one-day workshop aims to bring together researchers working on various aspects of the integration of refugee families into host societies and discuss the most recent research developments in this field. It also aims to discuss empirical research, data collection, and policy challenges in view of the new waves of refugees expected to arrive to Europe in the near future. To this end, the workshop will also include selected presentations on the experience and results of the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Refugee Survey, a representative survey of refugees in Germany that has been conducted as a longitudinal survey since 2016.

The workshop is financed by the project “Representative Sample of Refugee Families in Germany (GeFam2)”.

Authors are invited to submit extended abstracts of their recent work no later than June 30, 2022 (23:59 EST) to soepmig@diw.de.

The extended abstract should not exceed two pages plus references. An appendix of at most two pages for results or figures is welcome. Submitters will be notified by July 30, 2022 on whether their paper has been accepted.

Preferred topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Labor market integration of refugees
  • Advances in language and education and their effects on integration
  • Health of refugees
  • Discrimination, xenophobia, and their impacts on integration
  • Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on refugees
  • Determinants of refugee migration and prospects for the near future
Remote presentation or participation will take place only in case of urgent need or if pandemic regulations force us to change to hybrid attendance. Basically all presenters confirmed participation in presence and we will be very happy of meeting all of you in person.
Paper presentations:
The time allocated to your paper is about 30 minutes (20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion).
Poster presentations:
the poster format is A0. Please send us a copy via e-mail by November 25, 2022 and bring your poster printed with you.

The workshop will take place at the DIW Berlin.

The following regulations are meant to minimize the risk of getting infected with the coronavirus at the workshop and to protect guests, organizers, and employees who participate in the event. Due to the rising covid-19 numbers in autumn, we strongly recommend that you adhere to the following precautions:

• Please wear an FFP2 mask (wherever possible). We provide one in case you need a new one.
• Try to maintain distance to other participants (of 1.5 meters if possible).
• For better tracking of infections, use the provided QR-code to check in.
• Avoid simultaneous use of elevators.
• Pay attention to hygiene (coughing and sneezing rules, hand hygiene, do not touch your face).
• If there are signs of infection (e.g. fever, dry cough, breathing problems, loss of sense of smell/taste, sore throat, aching limbs), do not attend the conference.
