The DIW Graduate Center is pleased to offer a workshop on Speed Reading and Deep Reading of Scientific Texts, taught by Sabina Lammert. The workshop lasts one and a half days, and can host up to 14 persons. Please register with the Graduate Center (gradcenter@diw.de) by June 30, 2024. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Course Description:

Reading is not just reading. There are many ways to read a scientific text. Our reading skills do not automatically develop into their best form just because we read a lot. Similarly, someone who walks a lot does not automatically achieve peak form in agility, flexibility, strength, and speed. All these qualities require specific approaches and exercises. The same applies to reading.

Neuroscientific findings indicate that targeted training enhances myelination in the involved neurons, which improves the isolation of the neural fibers and thereby speeds up and refines the transmission of information. Through certain exercises, reading speed can be increased by about 50 to 100% — while maintaining or even enhancing reading precision.

Skilled reading combines fast and slow paces; it is a myth that fast reading is inherently superficial and slow reading is inherently profound. The ability to adjust reading speed appropriately greatly expands the range of reading experiences and enables switching between different speeds—from very slow to very fast.

In this seminar, you will learn a comprehensive set of techniques and exercises that will improve your reading speed and precision, your retention, and your understanding of scientific texts.

Learning Outcomes:

• Increasing your reading speed by approximately 50% - while maintaining at least the same quality
• Improving your reading concentration
• An easily implementable training program that allows you to maintain and further enhance the results after the course
• Approaches to more easily understand complex issues
• Approaches to better retain important content
• Tactics to quickly identify key information in a text

Preparation assignment

Please bring a selection of papers of your choice that you need or want to read anyway.
