SUMMARY:SOEP Brown Bag Seminar
DESCRIPTION: 12:30 - 13:30 // There has been a recent shift in Political Science towards integratingaggregate-level contextual factors into the study of individual-levelpolitical behaviors. while intriguing, findings are inconsistent andthis research area is bereft of theoretical underpinnings. Theunderlying idea that drives my dissertation is that civic andpolitical participation are, at least partially, a response toeconomic, political and social realities. The literature on socialcontext is rooted in the idea that the perception of threat influencescivic and political behaviors. As I argue, perceptions of the threatrepresented by foreigners-and thus the impact of social context-varybased on local economic context. Foreigners are more likely to be seenas threatening in cities with restricted capacities to fulfill theirtraditional welfare tasks, which has consequences for civic andpolitical behaviors. To develop this theory, I merge SOEP data withcity-level economic, social and demographic data
