SUMMARY:The role of energy storage in power sectors with fossil fuel phase-out
DESCRIPTION:10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. // The phase-out of fossil fuels, and a growing use of variable renewable energy sources, increase the flexibility needs of the power sector. In this context, different energy storage technologies become more relevant. Yet the role and use of electricity storage depends on many factors, for example technology costs and availabilities, as well as the level and flexibility of sector coupling strategies. This online event provides new insights in this field, based on research carried out in the BMBF-funded project "Future of Fossil Fuels in the Wake of Greenhouse Neutrality". We present findings of complementary model-based analyses and methodological advances - partly finished, and partly ongoing - which are carried out at DIW Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin and Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). Given the variety of analyses presented, this event should be of interest from both energy modeling and energy policy perspectives.
