Jürgen Schupp zum Honorarprofessor ernannt

Press Release of March 7, 2006

Dr. Jürgen Schupp, Survey Manager of the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) and Deputy Director of the SOEP department at DIW Berlin, has been appointed Honorary Professor for Sociology in the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at the Free University (FU).
The FU Berlin based its decision on Jürgen Schupp’s outstanding academic achievements in various fields of empirical social research, in particular the study of the labor market, social security and the family. He has worked closely with the FU Berlin for many years as a visiting lecturer at the Institute for Sociology and has successfully introduced innumerable students to the analysis of panel data and the methods of empirical social research. Jürgen Schupp’s professorship will strengthen and intensify the already existing teaching and research relationship between the DIW Berlin and the FU Berlin’s Institute for Sociology. At present, Jürgen Schupp is a Research Fellow at the Hanse Institute for Advanced Study in Delmenhorst, where he is analyzing the importance of personality characteristics (trust, fairness, reciprocity) on rising or falling social status.

Background: Jürgen Schupp studied Economics and Sociology in Mainz and Frankfurt am Main, completing his diploma in Sociology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt in 1983. He then took over a position as Junior Research Associate at the University of Frankfurt in the German Research Foundation’s Special Research Unit “Microanalytic Foundations of Social Policy” (Sfb 3). At the end of 1984, he transferred within the Special Research Unit into the project “Socio-Economic Panel”, located at DIW Berlin under then-president Hans-Jürgen Krupp, and thereafter made a series of longer research visits to the USA and Great Britain. In 1994, he completed his doctorate at the Ruhr-University Bochum on the topic “The Social Transformation of Part-Time Employment”, advised by Gert G. Wagner, SOEP Director and professor at the Faculty for Social Sciences at Ruhr-University at this time. As Survey Manager, Jürgen Schupp has been responsible for planning the further development of SOEP as a survey instrument for many years.
