DIW President Klaus Zimmermann Puts His Office at the Disposal

Press Release of February 1, 2011

Statement of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of DIW Berlin, Bert Rürup

The scientific work of DIW Berlin and its role in providing policy-advice have to be shifted back again into the center of public awareness. Contrary to public criticism, which has been immoderate in many cases, DIW Berlin still is one of the leading economic research institutes in Germany and beyond.

During the last decade, DIW Berlin President Klaus Zimmermann has successfully reformed the institute and invigorated it scientifically. The academic performance of DIW Berlin was appreciated repeatedly by the Leibniz Association, the German Council of Science and Humanities and the Scientific Advisory Board of the institute. Recently, the Scientific Advisory Board has denoted the institute as “fit” for the oncoming external evaluation in 2012 by the Leibniz Association, after the Associations’ amendments of the previous evaluation had been implemented under the leadership of Klaus Zimmermann.

To get back to an appropriate public awareness and to set the course for the future of the institute, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of DIW Berlin, Bert Rürup has come to the conclusion that it is sensible to correspond to the request of the President of DIW Berlin, Klaus Zimmermann, to place his office at disposal until mid-2011.
The Board of Trustees will decide on the interim arrangements and the succession to Klaus Zimmermann with prudence.
