With this conference, the MASMIE project carried out by DIW Berlin will be launched. The three-year project "Model-based analyses for the electricity sector design to favor the integration of renewable energies in the energy transformation" (MASMIE) is supported by the Mercator Foundation. In this project, DIW Berlin investigates the impact of the increasing integration of renewable energies on the electricity market, electricity trade, the power generation mix and the electricity grid. It also develops appropriate regulation strategies.
At the conference, researchers, policy stakeholders and practicioners will discuss current issues of the German electricity sector and its modeling. It will address both conceptual issues of modeling and relevant empirical problems (data, interpretations of results, etc.). For every session, there are one or more discussants as well as a general discussion.
Given the current situation in Germany, the focus is on the debate about capacity mechanisms. It will be dealt with capacity markets and other capacity instruments such as the introduction of a strategic reserve.
