The relationship between body and mind has fascinated thinkers for centuries. During the last decade empirical research has started to unravel the processes mediating between indicators of physical health and psychological variables. However, longitudinal studies on representative samples on these processes are still scarce. The aim of the present study is to assess the longitudinal interplay between functional health, subjective sleep quality, and perceived control. Data from participants of the SOEP with information on functional health, subjective sleep quality, and perceived control are analyzed. Functional health is measured by grip strength in 2006 and 2010, subjective sleep quality was rated in 2008 and 2010, and perceived control was assessed in 2005 and 2010. Autoregressive crossed-lagged panel analysis is applied in three age groups (< 40 years, 40 – 59 years, and >59 years) controlling gender and age within the age group.
