The project aims to assess the impacts of public support to the introduction of electromobility. Several political instruments will be analyzed with respect to their costs, benefits and in particular their impacts on the electricity market and grid. One objective of the project is to derive the optimal timing of the political instruments such as taxes or subsidies. The project is carried out within an international consortium with partners in Austria, Germany, and Poland. Several outreach activities such as conferences and workshops in addition to scientific and policy publications will contribute to the dissemination of the project's results.

DIW Berlin will contribute to two work packages in the DEFINE project: the assessment of economic effects as well as the electricity market analysis. DIW Berlin leads the work package on electricity markets where we investigate the effects of electromobility on the integration of renewables in the electricity grid as well as on the power price and demand. Other effects of a substantial increase of the number of electrical vehicles on the electricity market such as the provision of electricity storage by the electrical vehicle fleet will be discussed.
