German Science Foundation Grant for the project "Parallel imports, innovations, and generics: Competition in the German market for oral anti-diabetics"

Report of February 10, 2014

The German Science Foundation granted the 2-years project "Parallel imports, innovations, and generics: Competition in the German market for oral anti-diabetics" by Jun. Prof. Annika Herr (DICE) and Prof. Dr. Tomaso Duso (DIW Berlin and DICE). The primary focus of the research proposal is the empirical evaluation of parallel imports' competitive impact in on-patent drug markets. By means of an unique dataset of German and Danish monthly prices and sales in the the therapeutic market of oral anti-diabetics for the years 2000 to 2010, the study will estimate structural econometric models of pharmaceutical competition and simulate alternative counterfactual policy scenarios. The project aims to provide policy advice on the effects of specific regulations that is grounded on high-quality academic research.
