The goal of this project is to empirically analyze the work incentive and employment effects of earnings-related subsidies in the presence of high structural unemployment when labor market flexibility is hindered by wage rigidity related to institutional factors, in particular minimum wages and means-tested income support for unemployed people. We specify and estimate a structural microeconometric...

A large group of people is unable to keep up with the increasing retirement age and remain in the workforce until retirement for health reasons. The disability pension that exists today is only suitable to a limited extent to protect this group. The decisive factor for the reduced earning capacity is not the last activity performed, but all activities "under the usual conditions of the general...

This project focuses on the question whether increasing life expectancy is related to extending life in better health as bio-metric research in the US suggests. If this is also true for Europe, it will have great impact on the health and long-term care utilisation as well as on the retirement decision and the sustainability of social security systems. The impact of a higher level of healthiness...

Expenditure on medical treatment has risen as a proportion of national income throughout the European Union. There is a particular concern that, with an ageing population and therefore the prospect of more elderly people, the pressures for expenditure on health care will escalate. This issue is of concern both in its own terms and because of its fiscal implications. This project will refine...

In many dynamic decision problems, the relevant market prices and budget constraints are random variables whose realizations lie in the future. This makes optimal decision-making difficult as optimality requires an accurate quantification and interpretation of the dynamic processes operating in the market. The studies in this project model and test the agents’ expectations about relevant...

With the increasing urgency to address climate change, understanding public sentiment is crucial for designing effective and socially acceptable environmental policies. Working from home can benefit work–family balance, but, due to the gendered meaning of flexibility, risks increasing the unequal allocation of unpaid care work in couples. Does working from home increase the within-couple gender care gap? To address this question, we use linear panel data models based on German Socio-Economic Panel data from 1997 to 2014. The results indicate that working...
