Residual Load, Renewable Surplus and Storage Requirements for Renewable Integration in Germany

A key feature of the German "Energiewende" is a shift towards variable renewable power sources like wind and photovoltaics (PV). According to the medium-term scenario of the network development plan drafted by German TSOs, onshore and offshore wind could account for around 45% of gross power demand by 2032, whereas PV could contribute around 10% (NEP 2012, scenario 2032B). Afterwards, the shares...

Regulated Transmission Expansion in Electricity Networks: The Effects of Fluctuating Demand and Wind Generation

We study the performance of different regulatory approaches for the expansion of electricity transmission networks in the light of realistic demand patterns and fluctuating wind power. In particular, we are interested in the relative performance of a combined merchant-regulatory mechanism compared to a cost-based and a merchant-like approach. In contrast to earlier research, we explicitly include...

Modelling Economic Effects of the Renewable Energy Transition: The German Case

Many countries around the world are currently promoting the development and large-scale deployment of renewable energy technologies. Potential advantages of renewable energy include a lower dependency on scarce, imported fossil fuels, improved security of supply, and decreased emissions, in particular carbon emissions. While the benefits of renewable energy technologies are clear, the economic...

Regulated Expansion of Electricity Transmission Networks: The Effect of Fluctuating Wind Generation

Growing shares of fluctuating wind power increase the need to expand existing electricity transmission networks. At the same time, the natural monopoly character of transmission networks requires economic regulation of investments. In this article, we study the effects of different regulatory regimes for transmission expansion with a model-based analysis for central Europe. In contrast to previous...

Modeling Strategic Electricity Storage: The Case of Pumped Hydro Storage in Germany

We develop a game-theoretic electricity market model that allows analyzing strategic electricity storage in an imperfect market setting. We apply the model to Germany and examine different cases of pumped hydro storage operation. We find that introducing storage smoothes market prices and increases consumer rent and overall welfare. Electricity producers generally suffer from storage. The...
