In this project we investigate the determinants of locus of control using data from the BRIQ Family Panel. Particular interest lies in the effectiveness of a one year mentoring intervention which targeted low SES children at the age of 7 to 9. We find that the mentoring intervention had no effect on locus of control in the first 5 waves after the intervention. Small effects begin to show 6 years after the intervention. They are however not very robust. In contrast, bonding is found to have the strongest effect on locus of control, independent of current parenting styles. This may point to the importance of early childhood in setting the grounds for internal generalized control expecatations. I am happy to discuss these preliminary resuls with you and look forward to your comments and feedback.
