The Research Seminar on Environment, Resources and Climate Economics (RSERC) is jointly organized by DIW Berlin, TU Berlin, RWI Essen and MCC Berlin. It brings together environmental and resource economists from the Berlin and Potsdam universities and research institutions that discuss latest research by distinguished external scholars or by members of the group.

Topic of this seminar:

In partnership with an air quality regulator, we surveyed emissions at about 10 percent of all oil and gas production facilities in a major U.S. shale basin, over two years, with highly-sensitive technology. We also experimentally varied those facilities’ costs of emission abatement, by providing free information about ex-ante leak risk, and the extent of regulatory scrutiny to which they are subject, by increasing the chance of inspections. In our context, reducing the costs of finding emissions appears more effective than increasing regulatory scrutiny.
