Implementing the local heating transition: Future initiatives for the energy transition in Lüneburg (Wärme-ZIEL)

The project “Implementing the local heating transition: Future initiatives for the energy transition in Lüneburg (Wärme-ZIEL)” investigates feasible strategies to support the shift toward a climate-neutral heat supply in the Lüneburg region. The goal is to accelerate the implementation of municipal heat plans, gather feedback from local stakeholders, and develop recommendations and strategies that other municipalities can apply.

In collaboration with the ECOLOG Institute and municipal partners from the Lüneburg region, technical and organizational approaches to climate-neutral heat supply are being developed and discussed with local citizens and various stakeholders.

The DIW Berlin team focuses on two aspects: first, numerical modeling of various decarbonization options—such as large heat pumps and industrial waste heat—and their impact on electricity grids. Second, the team examines the future of regional gas distribution networks and estimates potential cost scenarios regarding future network charges.
