First prize:

David M. Blau, University of North Carolina and Regina T. Riphahn, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich: "Labor force transitions of older married couples in Germany". Published in: Labour Economics.
Prize money: DM 1000,--.
Committee comments: The paper addresses an important research question, the transition into retirement of couples, and exploits all features of GSOEP: longitudinal data, individual data and household data, and objective as well as subjective indicators. The methodological level of the paper is at the frontier. It is published in a leading international journal in the field of labor economics.

Second Prizes:

Felix Büchel, Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin, and Jürgen W. Falter, University Mainz: "Der Einfluss von Langzeitarbeitslosigkeit auf die Parteibindung in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland". (The Influence of long term unemployment on the political party attachment in Germany.) Published in: Zeitschrift für Parlamentsfragen.
Prize money: DM 750,--.
Committee comments: The paper addresses an important research question, the impact of unemployment on voter behavior. It exploits nearly all features of GSOEP: longitudinal data and objective as well as subjective indicators. The paper demonstrates the multi-purpose character of GSOEP by offering an analysis in the field of political science. The methodological level of the paper is quite high. It is published in a top political science journal in Germany.

William A.V. Clark, University of California; Deurloo, M. C., University of Amsterdam and Dieleman, F. M., University of Amsterdam: "Entry to Home-ownership in Germany: Some comparisons with the United States". Published in: Urban Studies.
Prize money: DM 750,--.
Committee comments: The paper addresses an interesting research question, of special concern in Germany, namely the chance to own a home. It exploits the under-researched household questionnaire of the GSOEP and demonstrates the multi-purpose character of GSOEP by doing an analysis in the field of urban studies. The methodological level of the paper is high. It is published in one of the leading international journals in the field of urban studies.

Liliana Winkelmann and Rainer Winkelmann, IZA: "Why Are the Unemployed So Unhappy? Evidence from Panel Data". Published in: Economica.
Prize money: DM 750,--.
Committee comments: The paper addresses a most interesting research question, what are the non-monetary losses that unemployed persons face. The paper uses a "soft indicator" in an economic context, and could thus provide a model for further research that expands beyond the usual economic categories. The methodological level of the paper is very good. It is published in one of the leading international economic journals.
