Workshop 12th International Research Workshop “Methods for Ph.D.”

Empirical research is seeking through methodological processes to discover, hopefully, nontrivial facts and insights. Beside choosing a topic and grounding an idea in theory, empirical research consists of gathering and analysing data as well as presenting results in scientific contexts in order to contribute new issues to the body of acquired knowledge – not only to someone‘s own but also to that of others.

The workshop this year tackles these steps of your research project:

  • Gathering data via (un)structured interviews and analysing standardised survey data and
  • using the computer for qualitative data analysis and as a tool for statistics.

These steps will strengthen the cooperation in empirical research to boost and streamline one’s project.

Fees and refugee scholarships

499 Euro (with accommodation and meals)
299 Euro (without accommodation, lunch and dinner are included)

There are offered up to three funded scholarships to support refugee postgraduate students from Germany. Full details including eligibility criteria and how to apply for a scholarship can be found on the workshop website.

SOEP 13th International German Socio-Economic Panel User Conference (SOEP 2018)

The 13th International German Socio-Economic Panel User Conference (SOEP2018) will be held in Berlin, July 19-20, 2018 at Berlin Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (BBAW).

The conference provides researchers who use the SOEP with the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other researchers familiar with SOEP data. Researchers of all disciplines (e.g., economics, demography, geography, political science, public health, psychology, and sociology) who use the SOEP or the SOEP part of the Cross-National Equivalent File (CNEF) are invited to submit an abstract. We encourage in particular submission of papers using the longitudinal features of SOEP as well as papers on survey methodology and cross national comparative analysis.

Besides the open call for paper submissions, we invite session contributions with four papers each on the following topics:

    • Implications of Technological Change
    • Intergenerational Transmission
    • Low and Minimum Wages
    • Migration and Integration (e.g., refugees, EU-enlargement)
    • Unification of Germany

At the 13th International SOEP User Conference the entire SOEP team and research community will celebrate Gert G. Wagner’s numerous accomplishments on behalf of the SOEP. This is a particularly fitting venue, as it was Gert Wagner who launched the first SOEP User Conference in 1993. We are delighted that this conference will be held at the same location as it was 25 years ago: the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (BBAW) on Gendarmenmarkt, in the center of Berlin.

SOEP Introduction to the new SOEPlong-version. From raw data to longitudinal analyses in 3 hours
    Post-conference workshop 2018 SLLS Conference

The German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP) is a wide-ranging representative longitudinal study of private households in Germany, located at the German Institute for Economic Research, DIW Berlin. Some of the many topics include household composition, occupational biographies, marital biographies, employment, earnings, health and subjective indicators. The panel was started in 1984 and offers longitudinal information for more than 80.000 persons in about 20.000 households.

The purpose of the workshop is to introduce and familiarize doctoral students as well as senior researchers with the file structure and potential of the SOEP data. Specifically, we explore the potential of “SOEPlong”, a new mode of data-provision based on datasets in long-format. Particularly, the workshop focuses on the longitudinal components of the data. We demonstrate and discuss the ability of the longitudinal household design to a) validate causal interpretations, b) combine characteristics from different phases of the life course and c) track dynamics between partners (and other household members) over time.

Given the huge amount of data (and the correspondingly large number of files) covering 30 years of micro data at the household, individual and event levels, the SOEP dataset is growing into an increasingly complex structure which can be difficult to handle for users, even if they are experienced empirical analysts. The workshop shall serve to help users cope with this complexity. Additionally, the potential of longitudinal data in general (and the SOEP in particular) to model life-course dynamics in sociology is still largely underused. Therefore, the course aims at encouraging the sociological research community to make stronger use of the benefits of this type of data in research projects on dynamics of objective, subjective and biographical indicators.
