Research Topics and Working Areas

Dr. Jörn C. Richstein works as a senior research associate and thematic lead "Electricity Markets" in the Climate Policy department at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) and is associated with the Berlin Economics Research Associates Program (BERA).

His research is focussed on the topics of electricity market design and climate policy (incl. the European Emissions Trading System). Currently the focus is especially on industrial electricity demand response and bidding formats, as well as policy instruments for emissions reductions in the electricity sector (e.g. Carbon Contracts for Difference).

He pursued his PhD under the Erasmus Mundus Sustainable Energy Technologies and Strategies joint doctoral program (Erasmus Mundus SETS) mainly at the TU Delft (3 years) and the Comillas Pontifical University (1 year).

Before starting his PhD research, he studied Business & Industrial Engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology where he graduated in 2011. In the course of his studies he spent time abroad at the Singapore Management University, gained work experience during industry internships and wrote his master thesis at the Rotterdam School of Management.
