Two Student Research Assistant Positions

(10 hours/week)

to provide support for ongoing research in applied development economics. More specifically, the student research assistants will assist in two research projects that investigate how households cope with extreme weather events in Mongolia ( and Central Asia ( Both projects implement and analyze household panel surveys in the field.


The students will assist in various topics surrounding the collection, cleaning, and analysis of household survey data, including developing the questionnaire for wave 4, preparing training material, cleaning the data, preparing a data documentation, and conducting consistency checks. The students will also search for and review existing development economics literature. Finally, the applicants will support the projects in administrative tasks, such as organizing workshops.


  • Interest in development economics.
  • Good knowledge of statistics and micro-econometrics.
  • Excellent working knowledge of standard office software, particularly MS Excel.
  • At least two years of completed university coursework in development economics, economics, or econometrics.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English. Command of German is not mandatory, but welcome.
  • Ability to work independently and be highly self-organized.
  • Knowledge of STATA or geosoftware (R, ArcGIS) would be an advantage.
  • Experience with analyzing household survey data would be an advantage.

The positions offer the opportunity to gain experience in implementing household panel surveys and working on empirical research. Work hours are flexible. The positions start on April 1, 2018.
