Current Project
In the project Coal Transitions leading research institutes in six major coal-using countries evaluate current policies and develop economically
feasible and socially just pathways to transition from thermal coal before 2050, in line with the Paris Agreement. Next to the Climate Policy department and the department of Energy, Transportation and Environment of the DIW Berlin (Germany), these are Tsinghua University Beijing (China), Technology IIT Ahmedabad (India), University of Cape Town (South Africa), Australian National University (Australia) and Institute for Structural Research IBS Warsaw (Poland). Additionally, the DIW Berlin investigates the effects of a coal phase out scenarios on the global coal market and the major suppliers using the COALMOD world model, especially considering economic sustainability of further mining and production assets. The project is led by IDDRI (Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations) and the research network Climate Strategies.
