DIW Berlin’s department Energy, Transportation, Environment offers a

Post-Doctoral Position in Energy Economics (100%, 6 years).

We are looking for a post-doctoral research associate with a strong interest in energy economics and electricity sector modeling to join us as early as possible. The candidate is expected to be involved in the activities of the research group “Transformation of the Energy Economy”, in particular to participate in ongoing research projects funded by German Federal Ministries BMWi and BMBF. We are especially interested in candidates with a strong background in quantitative modeling of energy markets.

Tasks

  • Research foci:
    • Electricity sectors with very high shares of renewable energy
    • Coupling of energy sectors (electricity, heat, mobility, green hydrogen)
    • Developing an own research focus is possible and welcome
  • Methods:
    • Quantitative modeling of energy markets
    • In particular, further development and application of our open-source power sector model DIETER (diw.de/dieter)
  • Expected output:
    • Peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals
    • Policy-relevant reports and project deliverables

Requirements

  • Excellent dissertation in energy economics (or related fields)
  • Very good knowledge of German and European electricity markets
  • Substantial experience with quantitative energy modeling, in particular optimization models of the power sector
  • A respective publication record, concerning both policy reports and journal articles
  • Software: knowledge of the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) and Python would be desirable
  • Excellent writing skill
  • Very good command of English
  • Knowledge of the German and European energy research funding landscape, and ideally previous experience with acquiring / conducting research projects funded by German federal ministries or the EU
