The Firms and Markets department of the DIW Berlin analyzes the determinants of consumer choice, firm behavior, firms’ innovation activities and productivity, as well as entrepreneurship. Specifically, the department’s research is focused on the study of the causes and outcomes of market-related policies and institutions that affect competition and innovation. These policies include product market regulations, consumer, competition, industrial, and innovation policies.

The Firms and Markets department of the DIW Berlin seeks a Postdoc (f/m/nonbinary) to conduct innovative research in industrial organization with a focus on sustainability, in particular on technological change and the implications of investments in the decarbonization of the capital stock for firm productivity and consumer behavior.

Researchers at the department do not have any teaching obligations but are expected to contribute to the policy and transfer work of the department. Voluntary teaching opportunities exist at all levels

The departments research is empirical in nature. In an integrated approach, we analyze and test insights from industrial organization theory by means of a wide variety of micro-econometric tools. These tools include structural econometric models, policy evaluation and panel methods, as well as machine learning tools.

  • A solid knowledge of empirical tools, especially the application of (micro-)econometrics methods and the ability to work with micro-level as well as aggregated data, is a necessary prerequisite
  • Candidates must demonstrate the potential to contribute substantially to academic research and policy analysis, including the ability to recognize and articulate differing viewpoints related to their work as well as an open attitude towards interdisciplinary cooperation.

Preferred skills

  • Very good language skills in English (knowledge of German is not necessary but welcomed)
  • Initiative and interest in teamwork

We offer

  • An interesting job in a dynamic research environment that tackles socially relevant research and policy questions
  • Work in a supportive team of experienced researchers

The department aims at producing high quality academic output that contributes to shaping the fields of applied microeconomics and industrial organization. Furthermore, we address important policy questions and provide policy makers with robust knowledge and rigorous methodological tools to evaluate the performance of public interventions.

The department employs 17 researchers, among which 13 PhD economists and four doctoral students in economics with a wide range of backgrounds, interests, and expertise in the area of industrial economics and trade. Researchers benefit from a tight-knit academic network within the DIW and Berlin, unique data resources, trained research assistants, high-profile research and policy events, active research seminar series and workshops.

The Institute provides access to a first-rate research infrastructure and it is excellently connected to the vibrant academic environment in Berlin as well as the international IO community. The working language is English.

The term of appointment is for three years and it can be renewed for three further years. Payment is according to EG 14 TVöD Bund and ranges initially, depending on prior work experience.
