SOEP Brown Bag Seminar Using Mathematical Graphs for Questionnaire Validation

We present an approach for studying three quality issues related to survey data, namely the detection of interviewer misbehaviour, the correct implementation of the questionnaire programming and possible redundant paths, which lead to case numbers hindering feasible statistical analysis. The idea is using a theoretical graph model for describing all possible paths through a survey questionnaire. The vertices of the questionnaire graphsrepresent questions and the edges the paths linking the questions. So, we are able to derive properties of the questionnaire by studying its graph. These properties are all traversed paths through the questionnaire and all possible data patterns resulting through filtering. Examining the properties gives first hints if there are peculiarities, which we need to examine in more detail. To study potential interviewer misbehavior, we test if the mean number of follow-up questions of interviewers is significantly smaller than the overall mean number of follow-up questions of all interviewers. To examine path redundancy and the questionnaire programming we test, if the path frequencies fall below a pre-specified value and compare the vertices and edges of the theoretical and empirical graph, respectively. To study the capability of our approach, we designed a small case study and applied it to NEPS data.

Cluster-Seminar Öffentliche Finanzen und Lebenslagen A firm-side perspective on parental leave

A large literature documents effects of parental leave on mothers' labour market outcomes, yet we know very little about the effects on their  firms and co-workers. We use unique administrative data that covers the universe of employees subject to social security and firms in Germany to address this question. We first establish some novel stylised facts in parental leave-taking  with respect to firm characteristics and worker substitutability: Mothers take longer leave periods  the more internal and  external substitutes are available. We then use an exogenous and substantial increase in  paid parental leave entitlements to study how longer leave absences by mothers causally affect the short- and long-run employment outcomes of mothers and their co-workers, as well as  firm productivity, worker turnover, and closures. For identification, we exploit the 2007-parental leave reform that introduced an earnings-related parental leave payment scheme and that reduced employment particularly among high-earning women in the first year after childbirth. Our findings provide important insights into the firm-side effects of  parental leave absences  and help reconcile why longer parental leave breaks have a negligible or even positive effect on maternal labour market outcomes in the long-run.

SOEP Brown Bag Seminar From workers to capitalists in less than two generations: A study of Chinese urban elite transformation between 1988 and 2013

Economic and social transformation of China during the past 40 years is without precedent in human history. While the economic transformation was extensively studied, social transformation was not. In this paper, we use for the first time harmonized household surveys covering the period 1988-2013 to study the changes in the characteristics of the richest 5 percent of China’s urban population. We find that the elite changed from being composed of high government officials, clerical staff, and workers in 1988 to professionals and small and large business owners in 2013. The educational level of the elite increased substantially. Membership in CCP has a positive (albeit small) effect on one’s income but is particularly valuable to large business owners.

DIW Applied Micro Seminar Knowledge Spillover and Individual Careers

Abstract: Through social interaction in the workplace, coworkers are likely to learn from each other (knowledge spillover) and this may extend the returns to firm-provided training from trained workers onto untrained coworkers. Based on German matched-employer employee data covering the universe of employees we investigate whether unskilled workers derive long-term career benefits if they were exposed during their first job to high-quality apprenticeship graduates in the same workplace. After controlling for a large range of confounding factors, we find evidence for positive long-run effects, which hold after leaving the initial firm and conditional on the quality of future peers. Moreover, effects are up to three times larger if the initial occupation has high skill content and task complexity. Overall, analysis suggests that there are positive external effects of apprenticeship training programmes via knowledge spillover onto unskilled coworkers.

    Cluster-Seminar Öffentliche Finanzen und Lebenslagen The effect of xenophobic attacks on refugees’ mental health

    The high prevalence of forced migration in recent years has induced a shift in attitudes towards immigrants and refugees and, in turn, increasing xenophobic violence. We address this topic and estimate the effect of xenophobic attacks against refugee shelters on refugees’ mental health. For this purpose, we combine two innovative data sets: administrative records on xenophobic crime by the Federal Criminal Office and the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees. Considering that the interview date is orthogonal to a hate crime taking place, we use a regression discontinuity design to identify the local causal effect. Our results indicate that hate crime has a substantial negative effect on mental health indicators, including the Mental Component Summary Score and the Patient Health Questionnaire-4. Furthermore, we show that the stock of country-specific human capital moderates the effect.

    Cluster-Seminar Öffentliche Finanzen und Lebenslagen A question of gender: How promotions affect earnings

    Occupational positions can explain an important part of the differences in pay between men and women. However, a considerable Gender Pay Gap exists even within the same occupational position. In this paper, we aim at understanding the reason for the gap within occupational positions and, therefore, investigate whether promotions lead to the same effect on earnings growth for men and women. Using unique data on the total population of all employees subject to social security, we are the first to estimate the gender gap in earnings growth after promotions in Germany. Our first results emphasize that women’s earnings growth is lower than men’s after being promoted within the same position. This effect cannot be explained by motherhood as this holds also true for childless women. However, the effect disappears when we add firm-fixed effects. This finding suggest that women select into firms where promotions lead to lower earnings growth.

    InGRID-2 Expert Workshop 'Comparative Analysis of Longitudinal Data on Educational Outcomes’

    Educational outcomes are crucial for social participation and labor market opportunities. To develop strategies to improve people’s social and economic prospects, governments are increasingly interested in international comparisons of educational opportunities and outcomes. The workshop ‘Comparative Analysis of Longitudinal Data on Educational Outcomes’ aims to describe and discuss educational transitions and outcomes in Europe across the life course. To evaluate educational outcomes in different educational systems, this workshop focuses on the use of various longitudinal datasets, which are key in going beyond merely descriptive approaches and getting closer to causal analysis. Contributions with a focus on comparability of longitudinal datasets, statistical methods for harmonizing longitudinal datasets, and comparative analysis of longitudinal educational trajectories are especially welcome.

    This expert workshop is targeted at experienced researchers. It is also open to other academics, policy professionals, and data users, and will provide participants with opportunities to discuss their projects and to network with international experts and colleagues in the field.

    SOEP Brown Bag Seminar Determinants of Locus of Control - Evidence from a Mentoring Intervention

    (together with Fabian Kosse and Armin Falk)
    In this project we investigate the determinants of locus of control using data from the BRIQ Family Panel. Particular interest lies in the effectiveness of a one year mentoring intervention which targeted low SES children at the age of 7 to 9.
    We find that the mentoring intervention had no effect on locus of control in the first 5 waves after the intervention. Small effects begin to show 6 years after the intervention. They are however not very robust. In contrast, bonding is found to have the strongest effect on locus of control, independent of current parenting styles. This may point to the importance of early childhood in setting the grounds for internal generalized control expecatations.

    DIW Applied Micro Seminar Mothers Working during Preschool Years and Child Skills. Does Income Compensate?

    Abstract: Increasing mothers’ labour supply in a child’s preschool years can cause a reduction in time investments that can lead to a negative direct effect on mid-childhood and teenage outcomes. As mothers’ work hours increase, income will rise and we ask whether income can compensate for the negative effect of hours by adopting a novel mediation analysis that exploits exogenous variation in both mothers’ hours and family income in pre-school years. We find that income compensates at least partially for the negative direct effect of increasing mother’s hours on child test scores at age 11 and this compensation is larger for high educated mothers. By the age of 15, income can fully compensate the negative direct effect in low and high education households but for different reasons. For low educated mothers, both the direct effect and the income compensating effect fade out. On the contrary, for high educated mothers these two effects remain statistically significant but cancel each other out. Simulations reveal two policies for governments which can reduce inequalities in the effect of mothers’ work hours by parents socio-economic status - a progressive tax and benefit system
    or raising the wage of low educated mothers.

    Cluster-Seminar Öffentliche Finanzen und Lebenslagen Average Wage Gaps and Expected Wage Cuts - An Investigation of Selection Neglect Bias in Income Expectations

    Economists spend much of their lives talking about and correcting for sample selection. Recent evidence from behavioral economics documents that participants in lab experiments don't account for selection effects when they interpret conditional distributions. This "selection neglect" can distort expectations in settings where individuals learn from comparisons with other people who differ in important ways from themselves. In this paper, we test if selection neglect can be replicated outside the lab. We examine a real-life application where selection effects are particularly strong: selection into part-time jobs. Using new representative survey data from Germany, we elicit employees' expected earnings for part-time and full-time jobs. We then explore if people expect lower wages for part-time work if they observe more selective reference groups. For identification, we exploit that average wage differentials between full-time and part-time workers are large but almost entirely driven by non-random selection into part-time. Specifically, we use heterogeneity in selectivity across occupations. Contrary to experimental studies from the lab, we find no strong evidence for selection neglect in this setting. This discrepancy can be explained by information frictions in real markets.

    SOEP Brown Bag Seminar The New Top-Wealth Sample - First Impressions

    Top-wealth holders are typically underrepresented or completely missing in population surveys. The lack of comprehensive national registers on high-wealth individuals in many countries challenged previous attempts to remedy this under-representation. In a novel research design, we draw on public data on the shareholding structures of companies as a sampling frame. Our design builds on the empirical regularity that high-wealth individuals are likely to hold at least part of their assets in the form of shareholdings. Based on data from over 270 million companies worldwide, we select all individuals who are both German residents and registered shareholders of companies. For our sample of the top-wealth holders, we interviewed 1595 individuals from a gross sample of 30,000 anchor persons. We find that both the socio-demographic make-up and the asset composition of top-wealth holders is quite different from the existing SOEP population. Top-wealth holders are more often male, older, married and hold their wealth in business assets or real estate.

    Berlin Lunchtime Meeting Bedarfsgerechtigkeit oder bedingungsloses Grundeinkommen - Wie können Verteilungskonflikte künftig gelöst werden?

    Die Frage nach der gerechten Verteilung von Einkommen und staatlichen Leistungen wird aktuell wieder kontrovers diskutiert. Was als Minimalbedarf angenommen werden sollte und wie dieser gedeckt werden kann, zählen dabei zu den zentralen Fragen dieser Debatte. Ist das Bedarfsprinzip – also die Orientierung an sozial oder politisch anerkannten individuellen Bedarfen – gerecht und zur Lösung von gesellschaftlichen Verteilungsfragen geeignet oder kann dies eher über ein bedingungsloses Grundeinkommen geschehen, das unabhängig von Bedarfen gezahlt wird?

    Cluster-Seminar Öffentliche Finanzen und Lebenslagen Does later retirement change your health care consumption? Evidence from France

    This paper examines the causal impact of later retirement on outpatient care consumption among the French elderly. Outpatient care are defined as all the care provided out of the hospital setting. This question is of interest since spill effects may arise if later retirement increases health care expenditures. To deal with reverse causality issue, I use, as an instrumental variable, the 1993 French pension reform in a two stage least square. This reform leads to a progressive increase of claiming age, cohort by cohort from 1934 to 1943. Moreover, I use a two part model to deal with the mass point in zero, the skewness and long-right tail of health care consumption, and to disentangle between extensive and intensive margin. I take advantage of administrative data HYGIE to observe both health care consumption between 2005 and 2015 and past careers. I find that later retirement leads to no significant change in the probability to consume outatient care, but a decrease in the level of doctor visits by 2.89% between age 67 and 72 and 2% between age 70 and 75. This effect is driven by the consumption of generalist doctor visits. Moreover, individuals affected by the reform tend to spend in average 0.38% more per doctor visits.

    DIW Applied Micro Seminar Salience of Inherited Wealth and the Support for Inheritance Taxation

    Abstract: We study how attitudes to inheritance taxation are influenced by information about the role of inherited wealth in society. Using a randomized experiment in a register-linked Swedish survey, we find that informing individuals about the large aggregate importance of inherited wealth and its link to inequality of opportunity significantly increases the support for inheritance taxation. The effect is almost uniform across socio-economic groups and survives a battery of robustness tests. Changes in the perceived economic importance of inherited wealth and altered views on whether luck matters most for economic success appear to be driving factors behind the treatment effect. Our findings suggest that the low salience of inherited wealth could be one explanation behind the relatively marginalized role of inheritance taxation in developed economies.

    Längsschnittdatenanalyse mit dem Sozio-oekonomischen Panel (SOEP)

    Der zweitägige Workshop bietet eine fundierte und praxisorientierte Einführung in das Arbeiten mit dem umfangreichen Datenangebot des SOEP. Aufbau, Datenstruktur, Ziehungsdesign und Gewichtungsstrategie des SOEP sowie sich daraus ergebende Analysepotentiale werden vorgestellt. In diversen „Hands-on Sessions“ können die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer den Datensatz sowie die vom SOEP zur Verfügung gestellte Datenmanagementinfrastruktur in praktischen Übungen kennenlernen. In den Übungen wird der Prozess vom Auffinden der interessierenden Variablen bis zur Erstellung eines Forschungsdatensatzes und der Durchführung erster Analysen nachempfunden.
    Für den praktischen Teil des Workshops sind Vertrautheit mit Methoden der empirischen Analyse sowie elementare Kenntnisse der Analyse-Software STATA eine Teilnahmevoraussetzung.

    SOEP Brown Bag Seminar Coping with Life-Event Shocks: Psychological Determinants of Resilience

    In this research we investigate the psychological determinants of resilience. Specifically, we observe whether the adaptation process to negative life events is different across the distribution of personality traits (the so-called big five) and of different life attitudes (such as locus of control and risk aversion). We take into consideration two different areas of shocking events: the job market one (through general unemployment and dismissal) and the familiar one (through divorce and widowhood).
    Using longitudinal data, we both observe whether specific traits reduce the immediate drop in life satisfaction due to the negative event, and whether they make the recovery over time faster. Also, under the hypothesis that resilience is built through the combination of different characteristics (usually called 'protective factors'), we aggregate various personality traits and life attitudes on the base of the most used resilience scales in the psychological literature. Taking advantage of the information present in the SOEP, we built different scales of resilience and we test their capacity of reducing the effect of negative events.
    These first provisional results show that personality traits can be determinants in both attenuating the immediate effect of negative events and in accelerating the recovery to the previous level of life satisfaction.

    Der zweitägige Workshop bietet eine fundierte und praxisorientierte Einführung in das Arbeiten mit dem umfangreichen Datenangebot des Sozio-oekonomischen Panels (SOEP). Aufbau, Datenstruktur, Ziehungsdesign und Gewichtungsstrategie des SOEP sowie sich daraus ergebende Analysepotentiale werden vorgestellt. In diversen „Hands-on Sessions“ können die Teilnehmenden den Datensatz sowie die vom SOEP zur Verfügung gestellte Datenmanagementinfrastruktur in praktischen Übungen kennenlernen. In den Übungen wird der Prozess vom Auffinden der interessierenden Variablen bis zur Erstellung eines Forschungsdatensatzes und der Durchführung erster Analysen nachempfunden. Für diesen Teil sind Grundkenntnisse im Umgang mit der Statistiksoftware STATA sowie grundlegender statistischer Analysemethoden erforderlich.

    Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an Studierende in MA Studiengängen. Studierende aus BA Studiengängen können teilnehmen, wenn Sie über ausreichende Kenntnisse der Statistiksoftware verfügen.

    Die Teilnehmendenzahl ist begrenzt auf 20 TeilnehmerInnen. Sollte die Zahl der interessierten Studierenden kleiner sein, so wird der Workshop für externe TeilnehmerInnen geöffnet, von denen ein kleiner Beitrag (15,- €) zur Finanzierung erhoben wird. Für Studierende der UOS entstehen keine Kosten.

    SOEPcampus Introduction to the Socio-Economic Panel Study: From raw data to longitudinal analyses
    Pre-Conference Workshop at the SLLS International Conference

    The purpose of the workshop is to introduce and familiarize researchers with the file structure and potential of the SOEP panel data. Particularly, the workshop focuses on the longitudinal components of the dataset. We demonstrate and discuss the ability of the longitudinal household design to
    a) validate causal interpretations,
    b) combine characteristics from different phases of the life course and
    c) track dynamics between different household members over time.

    Ankommen in der neuen Heimat

    Mit dem Zuzug von Geflüchteten in den vergangenen Jahren ist die Integrations-Debatte neu entfacht. Dabei ist die Mehrdeutigkeit des Integrations-Begriffs beachtlich. „Erfolgreiche“ Integration wird zumeist über strukturelle Faktoren wie Arbeitsmarktintegration, Bildungsinvestitionen oder räumliche Inklusion definiert. Die Tragweite von Zuwanderung kann jedoch nicht ausschließlich auf diese Faktoren reduziert werden. Insbesondere gesellschaftlicher Zusammenhalt wird maßgeblich durch subjektive Dimensionen wie Werthaltungen, individuelles Wohlbefinden und Zugehörigkeitsgefühle geprägt.

    Cluster-Seminar Öffentliche Finanzen und Lebenslagen Investment Losses and Inequality

    Systematic differences along the wealth distribution in investment performance will potentially have large consequences for the level and persistence of wealth inequality. These differences in performance are hard to measure except in a few, select countries with detailed information on household portfolios. In this paper we use a modified version of the Global Capital Asset Pricing Model (GCAPM), which relies on classed household portfolio data to measure investment performance in five European countries, where previously no measure of investment performance could be computed. We verify the accuracy of the modified GCAPM using Dutch survey data, which contains unclassed portfolio data enabling direct comparison with the regular GCAPM. In all countries households with less wealth exhibit lower investment performance, even after risk-adjustment. Further, we show that raising investment performance creates large efficiency gains, however, households below the median do not benefit from them.
