Integrating Randomized Controlled Field Trials into (Existing) Panel Surveys: The "Mentoring of Refugees" Study

Randomized controlled trials (RCT) are the gold standard in research design for studying causal relationships. In migration studies, they can, for instance, help studying the effects of government and non-government programs on migrant integration. However, RCTs are challenging and cost-intensive to conduct. In this brief, we outline a research design that integrates RCTs into existing panel surveys ...

Predictors of Refugee Adjustment: The Importance of Cognitive Skills and Personality

In light of the recent worldwide migration of refugees, determinants of a more or less successful integration are heavily discussed, but reliable empirical investigations are scarce and have often focused on sociodemographic factors. In the present study, we explore the role of several individual characteristics for refugee adjustment in the areas of (a) institutional, (b) interpersonal and (c) intrapersonal ...

Sampling in Times of High Immigration: The Survey Process of the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees

Over the course of 2013 to 2016, over one million asylum seekers arrived in Germany, around 890,000 of them in 2015 alone. The growing refugee population posed a major challenge for Germany’s policy makers, civic administrators, and society at large, in finding new approaches to registration procedures, housing, and social and economic integration. To design policies and programs that meet these needs, ...

Do immigrants prefer regions in which people are generally more open towards immigrants and immigration?

In my dissertation, I analyse the effect of migrant-open climate on immigrant location choice: Do immigrants prefer regions in which people are generally more open towards immigrants and immigration? I argue that to maximise well-being, immigrants reduce their risk of facing discrimination by choosing regions of residence in which migrant-open climate is higher. To capture revealed...

The Integration of Immigrant Cohorts in the German Labor Market

This paper aims to shed some lights on the integration patterns of different labor migrant cohorts in Germany. The migrant cohorts here contain three different groups. First, the immigrants who migrated before 1984, the second group are individuals who arrived in Germany between 1995-2007 and the last group are the people who migrated between 2008-2013. The migrant cohorts and data analysis...

Living Conditions and the Mental Health and Well-being of Refugees: Evidence from a Representative German Panel Study

The mental health and well-being of refugees are both prerequisites for and indicators of social integration. Using data from the first wave of a representative prospective panel of refugees living in Germany, we investigated how different living conditions, especially those subject to integration policies, are associated with experienced distress and life satisfaction in newly-arrived adult refugees. ...

Immigration and the Evolution of Local Cultural Norms

We study the local evolution of cultural norms in West Germany in reaction to the sudden presence of East Germans who migrated to the West after reunification. These migrants grew up with very high rates of maternal employment, whereas West German families followed the traditional breadwinner-housewife model. We find that West German women increase their labor supply and that this holds within household. ...
