The German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP) is currently creating a new Innovation Sample (SOEP-IS) while at the same time increasing the size of the core SOEP. Starting with the 2012 survey, a CAPI version of the Day Reconstruction Method (adaption of DRM by Kahneman et al. 2004 and a replication of 2009 PSID's supplement on Disability and Use of Time; DUST) has been given to respondents. The DRM is used to determine how people spend their time and how they experience their various activities and surroundings. The aim is to collect data on a person's experiences in a given day through a systematic reconstruction of his or her activities on the following day.
In our DRM-Module, a list of 22 activities was given to the respondents. For each episode of the day the respondents were asked to report up to two activities and a general rating of pleasantness. Additional ratings of emotions, current location, and accompanying persons were collected for three random episodes. The first data collection took place in 2012 and 2,050 respondents (Mage = 52.2 years, Range = 17 - 95 years, 52.4% female) with diverse education (ISCED 0/1/2 = 16.4%, ISCED 3 = 51.3%, ISCED 4/5/6 = 32.3%) and employment status (53.3% working, 46.7% not working) in 1,265 households were surveyed. The DRM module was surveyed for the second time in 2013 and will be replicated again in 2014 and 2015.
The presentation will give a detailed overview of the CAPI adaptation of the DRM. Furthermore, we will present descriptive results, sequence index plots of activities, and preliminary longitudinal results on stability and change over time.
