The 9th International Conference of SOEP Users has been a great success. More than 70 presentations (incl. poster session) were given and more than 160 participants attended. This was an increase of nearly 40 percent compared to the 2008 conference.

As in the years before, the Society of Friends of the DIW Berlin honored the best papers and the best poster presented at the conference. The SOEP2010 program committee has seclected the following presentations for the awards:

Johannes Uhlig, Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB): "Underachievement:
Do Teachers' and Parents' Decisions Conceal Young People's Learning Potentials?" (first prize)
Dean Lillard, Cornell University, Ithaca/NY: "Keeping it in the family? If parents smoke do children follow?" (second prize)
Best Poster
Timo Hener, Ifo Institute for Economic Research, Munich for the poster: "Do Couples bargain over fertility? New evidence based on child preference data"
Felix Büchel Award 2010: Richard E. Lucas

This year the selection committee appointed Richard E. Lucas from Michigan State University to be the winner of the award in memory of Felix Büchel. The winner met the four criteria that are essential to be selected: presenting interdisciplinary longitudinal research; with a comparative perspective situated in a national and international context; publishing in renowned journals and policy papers; making extensive use of the SOEP in research and training; playing an active role in promoting SOEP‘s future development.
