Michael Krämer has been working as a research assistant at the SOEP since November 1, 2019, on the DFG-funded project, “Personality and social relationship dynamics: Short- and medium-term processes in daily life (DIPS),” with David Richter. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Clinical and Health Psychology, both from Freie Universität Berlin. While completing his studies, he worked as a student research assistant at the SOEP on the generation of SOEP-IS data.
Ph.D. candidate Johannes Seebauer switched to the SOEP as a member of the DIW Berlin Graduate Center in early October 2019. Following undergraduate studies in management in Regensburg, he obtained a M.Sc. in Economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where he was a Fulbright scholar. He also holds a M.Res. in Economics from Sciences Po Paris. In his master thesis, he used individual-level data from the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) to examine the effects of the introduction of the German minimum wage on the employment transition probabilities of workers directly affected by the minimum wage. Johannes’ research interests are focused on labor economics, economics of inequality, economics of education, and microeconometrics.

Jürgen Schupp has stepped down from his position as Head of the Division of Knowledge Transfer and Vice-Director of the SOEP so that he can devote himself to his research projects. We are fortunate that he plans to remain an active part of the SOEP team and research community for some time. His experience and expertise in research policy will also continue to benefit the scientific community: He was appointed Vice-Chair of the German Data Forum (RatSWD) at their 53rd meeting on November 7-8, 2019.
At the November meeting of the DIW Board of Trustees, Markus M. Grabka was appointed Acting Head of the Division of Knowledge Transfer for one year. Carsten Schröder was appointed Vice-Director of the SOEP.
The SOEP Survey Committee has approved the establishment of the new Junior Research Group “Social and Psychological Determinants of Mental Health in the Life Course (SocPsych-MH)”. Headed by Hannes Kröger, the group will consolidate work on three research projects. For more information, see the research group website.
Sabine Zinn received the University of Bamberg’s Outstanding Habilitation Prize for her post-doctoral habilitation thesis entitled: “Methods of Survey Statistics and Statistical Demography”. The prize is sponsored by Sparkasse Bamberg.
Former SOEP staff member Simon Kühne received the early career award of the ASI for his work on interviewer effects in the SOEP. The award was presented at the joint meeting of the Working Group of German Market and Social Research Institutes (ASI) and the Methods of Empirical Social Research Section of the German Society for Sociology (DGS) on November 15-16, 2019, at GESIS, Cologne.
