The study was established by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) of the Federal Employment Agency (BA), the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB), the Family Research and Demographic Analysis (FReDA) project, the Research Center of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF-FZ) and the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) at DIW Berlin. The project builds on the “IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees” and the Family Research and Demographic Analysis (FReDA) project carried out at the BiB.

Refugees of Ukrainian nationality took part in a comprehensive, representative, recurring social science survey in 2022 and 2023. The new data version now contains four data sets. The person dataset, which comprises the data from the individual interviews, has not changed in version 1, nor has the duration dataset. In the instrumentation dataset, the values for one variable have been corrected (end_language). Version 1 is the first release of the pbrutto dataset, which supplements the data with information on the survey procedure and respondent participation, for example, as well as weighting factors for the households and individuals in the survey.

Data Collection: infas Institut für angewandte Sozialwissenschaft GmbH

Population: Refugees from Ukraine living in Germany

Selection method: This survey is based on a random sample. Using the Central Register of Foreign Nationals, around 100 municipalities in Germany were selected in which many Ukrainian refugees are registered. Refugees were randomly selected from these municipalities on the basis of population register data. More information about the selection method.

Collection mode: The interview methodology is centred on the individual questionnaire. The fieldwork for the study was conducted by the Institute for Applied Social Sciences (infas) among refugees from Ukraine aged between 18 and 70 based on an online questionnaire (alternatively, respondents were given the option of completing a paper questionnaire). The study builds on the “IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees,” which has been running since 2016, and the Family Research and Demographic Analysis (FReDA) project.
