Report of December 19, 2012
What is a better measure for the accomplishment of a doctoral program than its graduates? In this spirit, the DIW Graduate Center doctoral program truly is a success story!
As many as seven participants of the GC’s structured training and research program successfully defended their doctoral theses in 2012. Five of them attended this year’s celebratory graduation ceremony on Friday, 14 December 2012, and received their doctoral certificate. Their attainments were honored by speeches of Dean of the GC, Prof. Dr. Helmut Lütkepohl, and the designated Chairman of the Executive Board of DIW Berlin, Dr. Marcel Fratzscher.
Reflecting the broad spectrum of research done at the GC, the topics of this year’s doctoral theses cover a wide range: the economics of labor, education, development, and environment.
The DIW Berlin Graduate Center provides excellent training in economics and related social sciences to outstanding young doctoral students from around the world. Its program follows highly demanding international standards in the design of its coursework. Participants receive both an intense and broad academic training as well as individually tailored supervision of their dissertations. The Graduate Cen-ter PhD program is facilitated by DIW Berlin, allowing the students to apply their knowledge in the professional research environment of one of Germany‘s leading economic think‐tanks. Being involved in the institute’s research projects, students gain stimulating hands‐on research experience while working on their doctoral theses.
