Conference on Crises and the Distribution

Date

September 29 - 30, 2014

Location

Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften
Jägerstraße 22/23
10117 Berlin

Speakers

Anders Björklund (Swedish Institute for Social Research, Stockholm University) Martin Hellwig (Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods, Bonn University)

The financial crisis of 2007/8 was followed by the first contraction in the global economy since World War II: the Great Recession. This Recession not only lowered the average living standard, but, most likely, it also changed the shape of the income distribution. These effects are likely to differ by countries and societal groups.

A conference on Crises and the distribution will be held in Berlin on September 29th and 30th, 2014. The conference is linked to the Ph.D. program on "Public economics and inequality," which is arranged by the Hans-Böckler Foundation in collaboration with the Free University Berlin.

Submissions on the following and related topics will be considered:

  • the distributions of living standards, inequality, poverty, and mobility before and after the 2008 Financial Crisis
  • micro and macro models on the (causal) relationships between inequality and economic development / crisis and empirical tests of such models
  • policy lessons: the role of public policies for economic growth and inequality during the 2008 Financial Crisis
  • cross-country comparisons, e.g. between rich and poor countries, and comparisons across different societal groups

Deadline for submission: 4th July, 2014

Notification of acceptance: 1st August, 2014
