Tilman Brück, Head of the Department of International Economics at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) has been awarded the "IAP Award for Young Scientists 2008". The prize is awarded jointly by the InterAcademy Panel (IAP) and TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world.
The prize money of USD 10.000 is intended to enable a joint research project with the Zorig Foundation of Mongolia on poverty in Mongolia. The Zorig Foundation is headed by Oyun Sanjaasuren, a Mongolian MP and former foreign minister of her country. As a kick-off for the project, a research workshop will be held in Ulaanbaatar in March. Tilman Brück is a development economist focussing on poverty and coping strategies of vulnerable households in developing countries. His ma-or research interests also include the economics of conflict, reconstruction and terrorism. He was elected as a member of the German Young Academy in 2007. He also serves as an Assistant Professor of Deve-lopment Economics at Humboldt University Berlin. IAP is a global network of the world's science academies, launched in 1993. Its primary goal is to help member academies work together to advise citizens and public officials on the scientific aspects of critical global issues.Its German members include the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
