The Public Economics Department analyzes how financial, fiscal, and social policies influence economic decisions made by individuals, households, and companies. The department’s key focus is on fiscal and social policy in Germany, with analyses based on microsimulation models and microeconometric methods. Of particular interest are the behavioral patterns of households, companies, and policy makers, as well as the distributional effects of fiscal and social policy. 

The department of Public Economics of the DIW Berlin seeks a

Postdoc (f/m/nonbinary) (100%, 18 Months)

with a strong interest in public economics. The candidate will be involved a research project on wealth, inheritances and taxation using German administrative inheritance tax, income tax and SOEP survey data. We are especially interested in candidates with a strong background in measurement of income and wealth inequality, applied micro-econometrics and optimal taxation.

Tasks

  • Measure and analyze distribution of income and wealth in Germany combining SOEP survey data and administrative income and inheritance tax data
  • Estimate and investigate the gender inheritance and gender wealth gap
  • Estimate behavioral responses to wealth and inheritance taxation
  • Peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals
  • Conference presentations and knowledge transfer

Requirements

  • Interest in and expertise in above research topics and tasks.
  • Doctoral and undergraduate degree (master's, diploma) in economics.
  • Experience in the analysis of administrative tax data and/or survey panel data.
  • Experience in using e.g. Stata, R, or Python.
  • Very good knowledge of English.

Payment is according to EG 14 TVöD Bund and ranges initially, depending on prior work experience.
