The Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), a research-driven infrastructure based at DIW Berlin, is one of the largest and longest running multidisciplinary panel studies worldwide, and currently surveys around 30,000 people in nearly 15,000 households. SOEP aims to capture social change and thus handles a constant stream of new and diverse topics and tasks. Its data collection and generation adhere to the concept of the survey or data life cycle.

 Starting from October 1st, 2024, DIW Berlin is looking for a Doctoral student (f/m/div) (Part-time - 65%).

This position is suitable for furthering scientific training according to Section 2, paragraph 1 of the Act on Fixed-Term Employment Contracts in Academic (WissZeitVG).

Project description

The Leibniz ScienceCampus "SOEP-RegioHub - Regional Development Dynamics and their Social, Economic, and Political Consequences" is a joint project launched in 2020 by Bielefeld University and the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) at DIW Berlin (see www.lsc-soep-regiohub.com).

The planned sub-project "Local Media Climate - How Regional Off- and Online Media Shape Political Attitudes and Behavior" of the second funding phase of Campus 2024 to 2028 aims to analyze small-scale media and mood images and their effect on political attitudes. To this end, an innovative database of indices of the regional political climate is to be developed based on sources such as local newspaper articles, social media, election results, etc. and linked with data from the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP). Close research cooperation with the other projects on campus is planned. DIW Berlin is looking for a Doctoral student (m/f/d) for the sub-project led by Dr. Jan Goebel (SOEP/DIW Berlin) and Prof. Dr. Simon Kühne (AG Applied Social Data Science, Bielefeld University).

Your responsibilities

  • Collaboration in the collection, management and processing of research data including survey data and digital trace data (e.g. social media data)
  • Creation of indices on the regional political climate
  • Publications in the fields of computational social science, regional inequalities or political science
  • Collaboration with the other sub-projects and researchers at the Leibniz ScienceCampus
  • Presentation of the project's research at national and international workshops and conferences

Your qualifications

  • University degree in the field of sociology, political science, statistics, data science or another related field
  • Practical experience with R and/or Python
  • Experience in analyzing survey data, ideally with SOEP data
  • Experience in collecting and analyzing social media data and digital trace data or comparable unstructured data
  • Knowledge of methods in the field of natural language processing and "text-as-data", or knowledge in the field of machine learning or data science is an advantage
  • Ideally experience in the analysis of geographic/spatial data and survey data
  • Very good spoken and written German and English skills

You are paid according to the collective agreement for the public sector (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), which includes an annual bonus as well as a company pension with VBL Ost.

The office is located in the middle of Berlin-Mitte convenient to public transportation. As a DIW Berlin employee, you are eligible for a reduced VBB-Firmenticket that is partially subsidized.

The position is linked of obtaining a doctorate. It would be an advantage to be integrated in the structured doctoral program, preferably in the Berlin area. A doctoral agreement will be concluded with DIW Berlin, which guarantees, among other things, qualified individual supervision.

The position is limited to a period of 4 years. Remuneration is paid according to TVöD Bund, salary group 13.
