Zimmermann zum ARGE-Vorsitzenden gewählt

At the annual meeting of the Association of German Economic Research Institutes (ARGE) on 14 April 2005, Prof. Dr. Klaus F. Zimmermann, President of DIW Berlin and Director of the Research Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Bonn was elected director. Prof. Dr. Klaus F. Zimmermann succeeds Prof. Dr. Thomas Straubhaar, who was not available for this office anymore
After the election, Prof. Dr. Zimmermann stressed the outstanding significance of scientific excellence and political independence of the institutes: The ARGE institutes play a key role in our great economic and political challenges, as they can offer scientifically substantiated solu-tions. The policy makers must continue the selected reform process of the economy and soci-ety. German policy consultancy is organized exceptionally well; the necessary consulting ser-vices are rendered on a very high scientific level.
Prof. Dr. Ulrich Blum (Halle Institute for Economic Research), Prof. Dr. Johann Eekhoff (In-stitute for Economic Policy at the University of Cologne), Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Franz (Centre for European Economic Research Mannheim), Prof. Dr. Hans-Werner Sinn (Institute for Eco-nomic Research Munich) as well as Prof. Dr. Thomas Straubhaar (Hamburg Institute of Inter-national Economics) were elected assistant directors. The General Secretary of the ARGE in-stitutes for many years, Ralf Messer, was confirmed in office. Prof. Dr. Dennis Snower (Kiel Institute of World Economics) and Prof. Dr. Christoph Schmidt (Rhine-Westphalian Institute for Economic Research) continue to be assistant directors of the executive board.
The annual meeting of the ARGE institutes took place within the framework of the 68th sci-entific meeting with the topic “Can Germany Sustain Locational Competition?”. Lionel Fon-tagné, Director of the Centre d´Etudes Prospectives et d´Informations Internationales in Paris and Dr. Bernd Pfaffenbach, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labor held the successful guest lectures.
The Association of German Economic Research Institutes was established in 1949 with the purpose of economic and political information exchange and policy consultancy.
