As professional exchange is a prerequisite for excellence in research, policy consulting, early career development and infrastructure provision, it plays an important role in DIW Berlin’s work. National and international networks enrich the institute’s scientific research while holding researchers to global academic standards. DIW Berlin’s research departments and SOEP actively partake in collaborative projects with other institutions.
The Leibniz Association unites more than 96 institutions focusing on applied basic research and the provision of scientific infrastructure. Leibniz institutes are subject to a transparent and independent evaluation process, which takes place every seven years. Due to their national significance, the federal and state governments jointly fund the institutes of the Leibniz Association. DIW Berlin has been a member of the Leibniz Association since its foundation and is active in various cooperation formats within the association. At the scientific level, these include, for example, two Leibniz Labs on the topics of pandemic preparedness and systemic sustainability.
DIW Berlin is integrated into the higher education network of the German capital and its surrounding area, maintaining close partnerships with Humboldt University, Freie Universität Berlin, and the Technical University in Berlin; the University of Potsdam and the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) in Brandenburg; and other local institutes of higher education, including the Hertie School, the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT Berlin) and the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin).
Europeanization and globalization are intertwining the German economy and society with international partners – which is why DIW Berlin's research, consulting, infrastructure and personnel policy increasingly reflect international perspectives. DIW Berlin is expanding its role as a European-oriented institution in an international environment, creating attractive conditions for internationally mobile researchers and is increasingly active on the international job market. The networking of the institute within and outside of Berlin, nationally and internationally, disciplinary and interdisciplinary as well as with universities, other Leibniz institutions and other non-university research institutions will be further promoted. Among the formal and informal cooperation partners are for example the London School of Economics and Political Science, the University of Copenhagen, the University of Gothenburg, the Charles University, the Pompeu Fabra University, the Paris School of Economics or the Ohio State University.
DIW Berlin measures itself against international scientific standards and integrates these into its work and quality assurance. The large number of collaborations with foreign universities and non-university institutions, particularly project-based collaborations, is of great importance for the Institute's work. In addition to institutional and project-related cooperations, the research departments of DIW Berlin and SOEP are integrated into corresponding subject-specific networks - cooperations that are particularly important in the development of national and international standards for panel surveys or in the context of EU research projects.
