Getting Started

We want to simplify your work with SOEP data as much as possible. The "Getting started" package is designed to support you.

Overview of our support offers

SOEPcampus - Courses on site

In the usually 2-day SOEPcampus workshops, SOEP beginners learn how to prepare the SOEP data set. First, they will get an overview of the topics asked in SOEP, the structure of the samples and survey details. They will then practice creating an analysable longitudinal data set from the original data. In addition, the use of weighting variables and intergenerational analyses will be the topic of the workshop. These contents are often followed by course modules for the analysis of longitudinal data.

We also offer SOEPcampus workshops with special focuses: for example on migration research, labour market research and spell data. The participation in a SOEPcampus-Workshop is free of charge. Further information and upcoming dates can be found here

We are also happy to offer a SOEPcampus workshop as an in-house event at your university. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

SOEPcompanion - Your online guide for working with SOEP-Core

The SOEPcompanion is your online assistant when working with the data from our main study SOEP-Core; it is both a reference book and a practical guide.

In the SOEPcompanion you will learn everything about the topics queried for SOEP-Core and the associated variables. It provides information about the different questionnaires, the composition of the sample and the structure of the data. It also provides practical guidance on finding the appropriate variables and analyzing SOEP data, based on the exercises of our SOEPcampus trainings.

If you work with STATA and use SOEPhelp, you can call SOEPcompanion from your statistics program.

In addition, many SOEPtutorials are integrated into the SOEPcompanion.

SOEPhelp - Support directly in the datasets

SOEPhelp is a Stata.ado that displays information about data sets and variables directly in the Stata window.

To work with SOEPhelp, you must first install the Stata.ado

You will find detailed instructions on our SOEPcompanion.

SOEPhelp can be used from Stata version 12 and is directly linked to SOEPcompanion.

SOEPtutorials - Video tutorial in a few minutes

With the help of the SOEPtutorials you learn to work with the SOEP data without having to attend a course on site.

Our tutorial series has a modular structure. You can use it to learn how to work with the SOEP dataset step by step, or you can call up individual clips to obtain specific information on a specific question in just a few minutes.

The topics of the single videos range from a basic introduction to SOEP to data structure and weighting to methods of panel data analysis.

You can find our tutorials on our YouTube-Channel or in our Media Center

You are also welcome to use the SOEPtutorials for your own courses.

Tel.: +49 30 89789‑428 - The database for variable search

With the help of, our web-based information system, you can quickly find the variables you need for your research topics. You can search in the data sets of several studies (SOEP-Core, SOEP-IS and BASE II, TwinLife ect.).

For all variables there are labels and central case numbers, including unweighted frequency distributions, as well as the associated variables in the longitudinal section (item correspondence list).

The literature based on the SOEP data is also integrated in (previously SOEPlit).

After an uncomplicated registration you can use a variable basket and the associated syntax generator. The syntax generator is available for SOEP-Core and offered for the programs Stata, SPSS and SAS. is directly linked to the SOEPcompanion. Here you will also find detailed instructions on how to use
